How to Write a Speech Outline

An outline works as a blueprint for your writing. However, many skip the step of writing an outline, with excuses such as “No time”. Unfortunately, that kind of attitude is wrong, because the time will be well spent to compose an outline, ensuring that your presentation will be focused and coherent.

For different speech categories, an outline may vary. Below is a basic organization for a speech outline, which includes three sections:

  • An introduction presents the topic as well as the main points of your speech.
  • The Body part contains your main points but focuses on the details. You will provide all the supportive or informative evidence in order to explain and support your arguments.
  • The conclusion summarizes your main points while stressing the most important details in order to leave a lasting impact for the audience.

Sometimes you may need to create a detailed outline. It usually follows the same patterns with a basic speech outline, but contains subparts to correspond with the main parts. Below is the description of the layout of a detailed outline, which allows you to present your materials for the speech in a concise and logical way.

  1. The Introduction
    • Greeting and Attention Gatherer:Capture the attention of your audience by using something simple yet appealing.
    • Thesis Statement:Use a sentence in the introduction part to specify the subject and purpose of your speech.
    • Authority: Present yourself to your audience by establishing your credibility and persuading the audience that you are qualified for speaking on the subject matter.
    • Summary: Present the overview of the main points in your speech.
    • Important Answer: This is simply an answer to this question: Why is your speech valuable or worthwhile for the audience to listen to?
  2. The Body
    • Transition: This is a sentence that signals the audience about the beginning of your main speech section while connecting to the ending part of your introduction.
    • Main points: Use a detailed presentation to describe your main ideas and points of the speech. Use examples, supporting ideas, as well as visuals to explain your points.
  3. The Conclusion
    • Transition: This is a sentence that signals the audience you are beginning to conclude your speech. This sentence should also be somewhat connected to the body part of your speech.
    • Paraphrasing the Main Points: Restate your main ideas and points while emphasizing the parts from your speech which you want the audience to particularly remember.
    • Closing Statement: Use a final sentence to emphasize your key statement.
